Catti-brie was born to parents who died when she was very young; her father moved them from Mirabar to Termalaine before being killed by a goblin. The dwarf Bruenor Battlehammer saved the orphaned girl, and she grew up with no memory of life before his adoption. Raised in Mithral Hall, she developed a stubborn, tough personality like her foster-father. During Wulfgar's service to Bruenor, Catti-brie helped him overcome his barbarian upbringing, leading to their betrothal until he was captured by Errtu. She later engaged in an on-again-off-again romance with Drizzt that culminated in The Two Swords. During the Spellplague in 1385 DR, she was struck by a falling strand of the Weave; her body remained on the material plane while her spirit was pulled to Shadowfell before being placed in a pocket dimension by Mielikki. In 2013's The Companions, it is revealed she chose reincarnation as a Bedine tribeswoman named Ruqiah, born in 1463 DR.

Catti-brie discovered the bow Taulmaril the Heartseeker in the destroyed Hall of Dumathoin and later wielded the sentient sword Khazid'hea, which she took from Dantrag Baenre after Drizzt killed him. She studied magic under Alustriel Silverhand but was wounded by a boulder thrown by a giant while defending Mithral Hall against Obould Many-Arrows, limiting her melee ability. Her life ended when the Spellplague struck, though she later returned to the story canon as Ruqiah.
