Corellon Larethian

Creator and preserver of the elven race, embodying magic, art, and warfare.

Corellon Larethian is the leader of the elven pantheon (the Seldarine) and the creator of the elven race. As the deity of Magic, Music, Arts, Crafts, Poetry, and Warfare, Corellon governs what elves hold in highest esteem. The 5th edition Player's Handbook describes the deity as "androgynous," while Deities & Demigods (1980) states Corellon is "alternatively male or female, both or neither." In the Forgotten Realms setting, Corellon resides in Arvandor on the plane of Arborea.

Lore & Background

Corellon created the elven race and raised Ye'Cind to demigod status. In an ancient battle against Gruumsh One-Eye, god of orcs, Corellon took his eye, making Gruumsh and the entire orc pantheon intense enemies. Corellon also banished Lolth (Araushnee) to the Abyss for her treachery, creating eternal enmity with evil drow gods. In the Forgotten Realms, Sehanine Moonbow is Corellon's consort; some myths claim Corellon gave birth to the rest of the elven pantheon in a female aspect, while others say they were fathered with Sehanine. The 4th edition sourcebook Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (2018) introduced the "blessed of Corellon" mechanic, allowing elves to change their biological sex after a long rest.

In Their Own Story

Corellon dwells in Gwyllachaightaeryll, the Many-Splendored, a magnificent tower of marble in the center of Arvandor. The art within its rooms constantly changes, though the central throne room remains constant. Followers gather in moonlit glades during Lateu'quor (the Forest Communion of the Crescent Moon) to praise their Creator through song, dance, and offerings of beautiful art that are sometimes transferred to the Upper Planes or used to decorate temples.

Reader's Guide

Worshippers include elves, half-elves, bards, elven warriors, and elven paladins. Clergy wear silver circlets, gossamer robes of bright azure, and blue cloaks; their favored weapon is the longsword. Corellon's clerics favor those who kill orcs and followers of Lolth but are upset by those who defile the dead or flee foes. Holy days include Agelong (celebrated on Richfest 4) to honor the battle against Gruumsh, and monthly Lateu'quor ceremonies. Rituals occur at natural geological formations and integrate with births, coming-of-age rites, weddings, and funerals.
